Improper step flashing is the leading cause of roof leaks at wall-to-roof transitions. Step flashing needs to be woven between shingle courses with each piece extending 4" above the shingle exposure. We see Harris homes where the last roofer used continuous L-flashing or just caulked the gap. That always fails. We tear it out and install proper step flashing with a kick-out diverter at the bottom per IRC R905.2.8.3.

Wind speeds above 60 mph cause shingle tab lift and adhesive seal failure per ASTM D7158 testing protocols. Our Harris inspectors check the entire windward exposure. Not just the obvious damage. New construction underlayment per IRC R905 and ASTM D226 (felt) or ASTM D6757 (synthetic). Ice barrier per ASTM D1970 required at eaves in climate zones with average January temperature below 25°F. We install ice and water shield regardless. It's cheap insurance against ice dams and wind-driven rain. Drip edge per IRC R905.2.8.5 on eave and rake edges. Proper starter strip with factory sealant for wind resistance from day one.

PVC membrane for Harris restaurants, commercial kitchens, and facilities with rooftop grease exhaust or chemical exposure. PVC resists oils and animal fats that destroy TPO and EPDM membranes. We install IB Roof Systems and Duro-Last PVC with factory-fabricated accessories for watertight penetration details. Built-up roofing (BUR) uses 3 or 4 plies of fiberglass felt in hot asphalt with a gravel or cap sheet surface. Oldest proven flat roof system, with 30+ year service life in Missouri. We still install BUR when the application calls for it.

We install gutter guards for homeowners who are done cleaning gutters twice a year. Micro-mesh over the opening, screwed into the front lip. Leaves and pine needles sit on top and blow off. Not 100% maintenance-free, but close. You might hose them once a year.

Emergency protocol for active water intrusion: (1) interior containment. Buckets, plastic sheeting, water extraction if accessible, (2) exterior tarping with 20x30 heavy-duty poly sheeting over damaged area extending minimum 4 feet past damage on all sides, (3) secure with 2x4 nailer boards lag-screwed to the roof deck (not through shingles), (4) secondary tarp overlap for multi-section damage, (5) document with timestamped photos for insurance. Permanent repair scheduled within 48-72 hours once materials are sourced.

Skylight replacement on existing curbs: VELUX FCM curb-mount units install directly on the existing curb frame. No structural modification, no interior disruption. The FCM sits on the curb with a built-in sill pan and integrates with a new QCM flashing kit. Low-E4 laminated glass with argon fill provides R-value improvements over older skylights.
